New Cabachon Finding

Yesterday was my day to attend a class versus teach a class at the gem and mineral club I belong to and I had a great time. It was a silversmithing class that was to explore creating a new finding for cabachons for beginners. I didn't have any sterling silver 16 gauge wire so I used some of my fine silver....okay to work with but next time I'll use sterling so it won't get out of shape. Easy technique using only the wire vs. sterling sheet and bezel wire so for beginners this is perfect. It also shows off the stone really well. Perfect for me since I'm not good at silversmithing.

I have one cab mounted already as you can see (isn't it pretty) and the second one needs to be thrown in the tumbler and polished up before I can mount the cab.

BTW, have you signed up for my newsletter yet? My Gem Tree Sculptures book will be on sale for a limited time as well as gem tree supplies, so sign up now to find out how to get your discount. If you sign up after tomorrow and the newsletter has already been published, I'll e-mail it to you so that you will get the information as well as the new tutorial which has not been published yet.

Cheers, Dana

  2. What an interesting looking stone. I know very little about gems, but love how unique this is.

  3. That is SO freaking awesome!!!! What class was that? I would love to know how to do that. Do you have to use a big stone or can you do something similar with that similar design???

Sandy, I'm not sure of the stone, but it is probably in the Agate family. I just like picking up stones at rock shows and forget what they are sometimes.

Ms. Casto, the class was taught by the Puyallup Valley Gem & Mineral Club, it will be taught again next month (4/17), but I could probably teach you myself as it is pretty easy. The size I used was probably a 20x30mm but you could make the finding smaller and use a smaller stone. The person teaching us said it was easier to make a bigger one first to get the hang of it. I'm sure you have lots of cabs you could mount this way.
