I Need Sheet Metal

I've been playing again in my craft room and normally when I play I'm painting or doing one of my other hobbies but yesterday and today was actually playing with sheet metal and wire. I wanted to make some copper bangles but didn't have any sheet copper but did have some sheet metal the color of copper and silver in 24 gauge. It is a little thin for bracelets but thought I would work up some ideas anyway. I really like how the copper colored one came out and I think in a heavier gauge metal it would work really well.

Funny thing that while I was at the craft store buying fake flowers (see last paragraph) I just had to go over to the jewelry and beads section and I found some sheet metal with patterns embossed. So, I got to play a bit more. Here is the set I created with the antiqued gold tone metal pieces.

I think for the other metal pieces I'll get out the big guns (the Dremel) to help with the filing and polishing as doing this with a little jewelry file was time consuming. The bracelet is my favorite piece but they all work well together but I do have to change up the necklace a bit as I just don't like the chain dangles from the top.

Since I was playing and there was no pressure to create something fantastic, at the home improvement store hubby bought me a copper tube cutting tool. This is too cool. I already had the copper tubing but had no way to cut it and never even thought about cutting it up into little pieces for beads but this was so much fun.

It's just this heavy chunky chain and I love it. I may have to make more. I think I'm obsessed.

To take a break from jewelry making, I decided to redo my front porch... ha ha, those of you that know me know that I can not grow flowers at all. In fact, plants and I don't get along and they seem to just wither and die a slow death. Well, last Fall I got the bright idea to put fake (silk) flowers in my flower pots out front. So, I planted sunflowers and mums. It looked so much better than the dead flowers and lasted all Winter. Well, it has been past time for me to update the porch for Spring/Summer. So, off to the craft store I went and found all kinds of silk flowers for my pots. My front porch is now ready for warm weather and I don't even have to water them.

On that note, I'll wish everyone a happy Memorial Day and let us all remember the Veterans who have given their life so that we may have freedom. Thank a Veteran today.

Delightful Bangles, a tutorial

I was inspired today to make a bracelet, so I made 3... ha ha. My fingers do hurt now but I did take pictures and write up a quick little tutorial if you want to give it a try. I got the inspiration from a Pin on Pinterest of this Bangle but it didn't have enough pictures for me so decided to make one for myself and do lots of pictures for you. This one is easy if you have all the supplies and you do not need any soldering equipment. So let's get started.

Supplies Needed:

  • Round nose pliers
  • Flat nose pliers
  • Flush wire cutters
  • Bracelet Mandrel
  • Hammer
  • Stainless Steel Block
  • 12 or 14 gauge wire (for bracelet)
  • 24 or 26 gauge wire (for wrapping)
  • 3mm stones or crystals

Instructions:

  1. Gather all your supplies before you start and make sure the stones you choose will slide on the wrapping wire.
  2. Cut 10” of your bracelet wire which is either 12 gauge or 14 gauge.
  3. Make a loose curl on one end of the cut wire with your round nose pliers.
  4. Form your wire around the bracelet mandrel inserting the straight end through the curled end. As you can see I have marked on my mandrel the size I want my bracelet to be. Mine is 8”.
  5. With your round nose pliers curve the straight end of the wire around to tighten.
  6. Make a loop with the curved wire.
  7. Hammer the wire on the bracelet mandrel all the way around… hammer more.
  8. Hammer on the stainless steel block. Switch between the mandrel and the block, hammering to harden the wire.
  9. When it is the shape you want, nice and round and lays flat you are ready to begin to add your stones.

  1. Cut about 36” of your wrapping wire which is either 24 gauge or 26 gauge and start wrapping on your bracelet at the coiled end.
  2. Wrap the tail of the wire until you just have about 1/4 “ left.
  3. String a stone on the long end of the wire.
  4. Bring the stone down tight against the bracelet.
  5. Hold the stone in place and start wrapping the wire around the bracelet.
  6. Continue wrapping about 3 or 4 times, add another stone.
  7. More wrapping.
  8. Continue wrapping and adding stones until you get to the end of your wire.
  9. Cut the wire at the top of the bracelet and flatten with your flat nose pliers.
  10. Cut another length of wrapping wire (not as much) and start wrapping around the bracelet. I like to start wrapping behind the stone and then wrap around to the front. I cut the tail off on top of the bracelet and flatten it with my pliers.
  11. Continue wrapping and adding stones until you get back to the beginning. Clip tails and flatten them on top of the bracelet. Always cut the wire on the top or sides otherwise it will scratch your wrist underneath.
  12. Enjoy your bracelet.
If you have any questions, please be sure to ask.

Copper, Does it Heal?

For the past month I have been having problems with my arm, most likely tendonitis from typing on the computer (dang those FB games) and working with my wire and beads..anyway if I take Motrin, it gets better. So, I'm thinking it is an inflammation of some kind. I had read that Copper would help and I could forgo the drugs when it is acting up, so that is the plan. Now if you believe in Copper healing this is a wonderful solution....I'm not sure that I do or don't but a lot of older folks swear by it for arthritis and wear copper bracelets. Since I do make jewelry, I have a lot of copper chain and wire around so here came the making of the copper bangles this morning. My wire was only 14 gauge and I needed 12, but it works for now. I've been wearing my copper love knot ring, see previous posts and the bracelets today and can actually say that my arm isn't as stiff as yesterday. Maybe it's working. I'll wear them for a week and report back. Here is a little bit more about the healing qualities of Copper that I obtained from the Jewelry Supplier web site.

Healing PropertiesHealers base their belief in Copper’s power to heal the mind and body based on the metal’s energy conducting properties. They believe that it can even facilitate this process and use it for creating crystal wands and other means of transferring the energy of crystals. They also attribute many of the same healing qualities to crystals and minerals that contain Copper traces.

Mental Healing
According to New Age healers, Copper can stimulate the flow of energy and hence move Psychic or Mental energies thereby helping the wearer overcome lethargic tendencies, resulting in a more vitalized person with amplified thoughts. They also attribute powers of communication, channeling, cleansing, purification, increasing self-esteem and freeing the wearer of mental burdens.

Physical Healing
Beginning in the 1970s in the United States, Copper's use as a healing agent began to see an increase. People who believe in its power esteem it as a very powerful assistant with Arthritic and Rheumatic diseases, but also look to it for its healing properties in improving the circulation of blood, increasing energy, detoxification, reducing inflammation, stabilizing metabolism and improving Oxygen use.
